Sustainable management of olive mill waste and the potential of biochar

Efficient management of agro-industrial waste is key to moving towards a more sustainable, circular, and climate-neutral agriculture . With this objective, Cajamar is organizing the webinar “Sustainable Management of Olive Mill Waste: The Biochar Example,” a training session that will address the use of olive grove byproducts—such as olive pomace and woody biomass—for the production of biochar and hydrochar , and their application as an organic amendment or ingredient for high-quality compost. A key issue for climate change mitigation The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) emphasizes that proper management of organic waste and the incorporation of exogenous organic matter into soils are practices with high potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the resilience of agricultural systems. The production of biochar and hydrochar is emerging as a promising avenue for utilizing residual biomass from olive groves, forestry systems, wastewater treatment plants, and agricultural residues. In the olive oil sector, mill waste has become one of the most valuable raw materials for valorization. The webinar will explain: How to obtain biochar and hydrochar from olive mill waste and olive biomass. Their benefits as soil improvement amendments. Its role as an ingredient in producing higher quality compost. New business opportunities and value creation within the circular agri-food economy. Webinar program 16:30 – Welcome and presentation Carlos Baixauli Soria , Director of the Cajamar Experience Center 16:40 – Olive pomace, composting and biochar: three aces for sustainability Ana García Rández , Researcher at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche and Director of the Sinyent Experimental Farm of AVA ASAJA 17:10 – New ways to add value to olive oil by-products Rubén Escudero Mira , CTO of Smallops 17:30 – Biochar, the solution for the soil and for the climate Álvaro Espuny Rodríguez , CEO of Carboliva 17:50 – Panel discussion 18:00 – End of the day This webinar is recommended for professionals interested in circular economy, bioeconomy, sustainable crop management and agro-industrial waste management , as well as for technicians, olive mill managers and students who wish to delve deeper into innovative solutions for the olive oil sector.

Sustainable management of olive mill waste: the Biochar example

This webinar will explain the processes of obtaining biochar and hydrochar, taking advantage of olive mill waste, olive biomass and the possibilities they have as a soil amendment, or mixture to obtain better quality compost. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) highlights that proper management of organic waste and the incorporation of exogenous organic matter are two of the practices with the greatest potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and curb climate change. The production of biochar and hydrochar offers enormous potential by utilizing residual biomass from agriculture, olive groves, forestry systems, wastewater, and manure. Among the most commonly used raw materials are sewage sludge, pruning waste (such as vine shoots), olive mill waste, straw, and rice hulls. In this session you will learn how biochar and hydrochar are obtained, especially from olive mill waste and olive biomass, as well as their advantages as soil amendments or as ingredients to improve the quality of compost.

The COEXPHAL–UAL Chair presents at Classijazz the European projects that promote the transition towards sustainable agricultural systems

On December 11, 2025 , from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. , a new session of the UAL Scientific Dissemination / ScienceJazz cycle will take place in Classijazz (Almería) , dedicated on this occasion to delving deeper into the transition towards more sustainable agri-food systems. The director of the COEXPHAL–UAL Chair , Cynthia Giagnocavo , will be in charge of presenting several of the European projects in which her research group participates together with researchers from CIT COEX , offering a clear and informative view of the challenges and opportunities of this global transformation. European projects driving change During the session, progress on initiatives such as Climate Farm Demo , Climate Smart Advisor , CODECs , Path2DEA and FoodCost will be shared, all of them focused on building more resilient, efficient and sustainable agricultural models. Through these projects, Almería's agricultural model has been presented in European forums, and this activity now seeks to bring it closer to the local public, integrating it into the conversation about how to move towards a more balanced and responsible agri-food system. Key questions for a sustainable transition The meeting will allow for addressing key issues such as: What is the real cost of food and how can it be measured? What business models facilitate a sustainable transition? What role do consumers, producers, businesses, and government play in this process? Through practical examples and project results, it will be shown how Almería and other European regions are contributing innovative solutions to the fruit and vegetable system. Science, dialogue and music True to the spirit of the ScienceJazz cycle, the evening will combine scientific outreach with live jazz music , as well as participatory activities so that the public can share ideas, questions and proposals on agricultural sustainability. It will be an open meeting space where science, culture and society come together to discuss how to move towards a more sustainable agricultural future.

Establishment and management of plant cover in autumn

The Cajamar Experience Center and the company Intersemillas are testing cover crop mixtures on fruit and citrus trees. This in-person workshop is part of this work and aims to share progress, focusing on how to properly establish and manage cover crops during the fall to ensure their healthy development. In recent years, the use of cover crops in fruit growing has gained increasing importance, not only as a tool for sustainable soil management, but also as a fundamental strategy for improving the efficiency of production systems. These cover crops help conserve moisture, promote biodiversity, and reduce erosion, adding value to agricultural management in a context where sustainability and innovation are key. With this purpose, at the Cajamar Experience Center we collaborate with the company Intersemillas in the evaluation of different cover crop mixtures in fruit and citrus crops, in order to understand their behavior under our conditions. Today's event is part of this joint effort and provides an opportunity to share the progress made, focusing on the correct establishment of the covers and the management practices needed during the autumn to ensure their optimal development.
