Influence of agricultural management on biodiversity and the health of Mediterranean soils

The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA) will celebrate on December 16, 2025 , in the Degree Hall. Huesca Polytechnic University. University of Zaragoza, the technical conference "Influence of agricultural management on the biodiversity, functioning, and health of Mediterranean soils," a meeting that will bring together experts, researchers, and professionals from the agricultural sector to discuss the importance of soil as a pillar of agricultural sustainability. The free, in-person event will begin at 12:00 with an opening ceremony led by representatives of the UPA (University of Catalonia), followed by a presentation by the PAC Network . The SOILBIO project will then be presented. This initiative, promoted by the UPA, studies how agricultural practices influence soil biodiversity, soil structure, and its resilience to climate change. At 12:30 p.m., the scientific results of the SOILBIO project will be presented, offering practical insight into the relationship between agricultural management strategies—such as reduced tillage, the use of plant cover, and crop rotation—and the improvement of fertility, water retention, and microbial biodiversity. The event will continue at 1:45 p.m. with a roundtable discussion , bringing together technicians, farmers, and institutional representatives to exchange experiences on how to move toward more sustainable agricultural systems that respect soil ecosystems. The event will conclude at 2:15 p.m. with the official closing ceremony. This event provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the key role of soil as a strategic resource in the agriculture of the future, reinforcing the sector's commitment to sustainability, innovation, and knowledge transfer at the field level. Identification of different seed species in certification samples

Seed certification is a fundamental process for guaranteeing the quality, purity, and traceability of plant material intended for agricultural production. One of the most important aspects of this process is the correct identification of the species present in seed lots, as the presence of weed seeds can affect both crop yields and compliance with current regulations. This workshop aims to provide a technical and practical overview of the species to be identified during the certification process, as well as those that may appear in batches of cereals, forage crops, and maize. Throughout the various presentations, morphological and methodological criteria for species recognition will be addressed, with an emphasis on those groups that can cause confusion or difficulties during inspection and quality control. The workshop is aimed at professionals in the agricultural sector, technicians, and personnel involved in seed production, marketing, and certification, with the goal of updating knowledge and strengthening the skills necessary to guarantee high-quality plant material free from unwanted contamination. GO CLIMALACT Multi-stakeholder Focus Group in Rodeiro (Pontevedra)

The CLIMALACT project continues to advance its goal of building a more sustainable and climate-neutral dairy model with a new Multi-Stakeholder Focus Group meeting on December 17th in Rodeiro (Pontevedra) . Galician producers, industry representatives, and other key stakeholders will participate in this event, reinforcing the project's participatory approach and the direct incorporation of farm input into the design of sustainability criteria. This new working session follows up on the focus group held in March 2025 in Vegadeo (Asturias) , which yielded valuable information for designing management, sustainability, and climate neutrality protocols adapted to different types of farms . That initial meeting identified guidelines aimed at improving management efficiency , reducing dependence on external inputs , promoting production diversification , and strengthening cooperation among farmers, cooperatives, and advisors —key pillars for boosting the sector's competitiveness. With the Rodeiro event, CLIMALACT now seeks to incorporate representative data from Galician farms , expand the sampling of different production models and strengthen the robustness of the analysis , ensuring that future indicators and protocols faithfully reflect the territorial and productive diversity of the dairy system in both Galicia and Asturias . This new step is fundamental to consolidating a more sustainable, transparent management that is adapted to the reality of the territory , and to continue moving forward with guarantees towards climate neutrality in the dairy sector .
