  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2025
  • Assigned Budget 147.166,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía

Abstract

Blueberries are widely consumed, and their antioxidant power is known; however, the exact concentrations of their bioactive components are unknown.

In this regard, the goal is to contribute to increasing knowledge about the nutritional value of Andalusian-grown blueberries, thus promoting their positioning in the market as a preferred choice and increasing demand.

The expected results have an impact:

  • Economical for Andalusian blueberry producers by adding value to the product.
  • Environmental, as knowledge about water consumption and carbon footprint will be improved, laying the groundwork for a declaration of sustainability and environmental efficiency.
  • Scientific-technical through the techniques used for the study.
Description of activities

It consists of five main activities, in addition to dissemination and coordination:

  • Identification and selection of 10 varieties of blueberries
  • Classification of varieties by analyzing differentiating nutritional values.
  • Development of a qualitative chemometric model using NIRS technology, developing equations that allow for the classification of varieties.
  • Establishing the foundations for a sustainability declaration for Andalusian blueberry crops.
  • Design of a digital platform to disseminate informative content and create physical and digital labeling in accordance with EFSA's functional property declaration legislation.
Objectives

The overall goal is to showcase the nutritional and sustainable benefits of blueberries in Andalusia through digital tools to position them as a preferred product in the market.

To this end, blueberries will be characterized based on their nutritional and health components, including their vitamin, mineral, and antioxidant composition. Non-destructive sensor-based models will be implemented to classify blueberries by variety and their nutritional characteristics. The foundations for crop sustainability studies in Andalusia will be established, and the benefits will be disseminated through digital tools.
