- Type Operational group
- Status In progress
- Execution 2022 -2024
- Assigned Budget 285.913,00 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Andalucía
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
- Project website GO Algae-copack
The goal of Algae-Copack is to create a new, sustainable, and biodegradable packaging for the distribution of fruits and vegetables sold by the Las Virtudes cooperative. The raw material for the new trays is macroalgae, specifically the well-known beach algae that accumulates at various coastal sites.
The new packaging would replace the current expanded polystyrene trays used, for example, to pack stew ingredients, vine tomatoes, and leeks, among other vegetable varieties. The trays obtained from the algae treatment would meet European regulatory standards, provide competitive advantages, and create a product that epitomizes the bio-circular economy.
Collection of invasive algae that become waste on the beaches of the province of Cádiz, transformation of these algae into a 100% biodegradable and suitable material (testing phase) to become trays suitable for packaging fruit and vegetables from the Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes Cooperative in Conil.
Manufacturing of sustainable and biodegradable trays for packaging fruit and vegetables for the Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes Cooperative in Conil (agri-food industry), made from invasive algae that accumulate on the beaches of Cádiz (waste).
