Description

While argan is considered an endemic species of southwestern Morocco, research carried out by the Plant Germplasm Bank of Andalusia, soon to be published, has revealed that argan cultivation was practiced on the Iberian Peninsula in the 12th century. Furthermore, this same research has located wild specimens of the species in various areas of southeastern Spain.
Currently in Spain, Argan oil can only be used as an ingredient in the production of cosmetic products, but in other cultures and regions, especially among the Berber populations of the Maghreb, its fruits are used extensively, forming the basis of many culinary preparations with great nutritional value.

Objectives

To establish, starting from argan, an alternative to the traditional woody crops of Andalusia, especially to olive cultivation, that is viable and sustainable, and that also allows agricultural producers to access high value added markets.
