Description
The Task Force aims to lay the foundation for the defense and market promotion of pure varieties of Iberian pigs that are in danger of extinction and exclusive to the Extremadura region.
All of this is achieved through in-depth study of productive varieties and the quality of the carcass and meat, biotechnological analysis of their genome, and the design of innovative crossbreeding and genetic improvement strategies.
The following activities will be specifically addressed:
- Characterization of farm productivity, meat, carcass, and product quality.
- Identification of genetic markers from a reproductive and meat quality perspective.
- Design and validation of crosses with Duros.
- Design of genetic improvement programs.

Objectives
- OBJECTIVE 1: Polymorphism analysis in genes of interest in the Torbiscal, Lampiño and Retinto breeds.
- OBJECTIVE 2: Evaluation of its phenotypic expression in the pure varieties under study for the design of genetic crosses.
- OBJECTIVE 3: Comparative demonstration of the productivity and carcass quality of a total of 600 pigs from crosses between different pure Iberian varieties.
- OBJECTIVE 4: Comparative demonstration of the quality of fresh meat and fat from pigs from crosses between different pure Iberian varieties.
- OBJECTIVE 5: Analysis of the quality of cured loin from crosses between different pure Iberian varieties.
- OBJECTIVE 6: Creation of a germplasm bank for the conservation of the genetic material of pure varieties of Iberian pig.
