AGROALNEXT Project: Control of microbiological risks associated with sustainable systems for the production and processing of plant-based foods

  • Type Project

Description
The project identifies sources and routes of contamination by Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella in leafy vegetables produced in controlled environment cultivation systems and processing plants, through monitoring plans, assessing risks after production, cleaning and disinfection.
Results
In primary production, the risk of transmission of contamination from the soil via the studied vectors was minimal. Irrigation water remains the main route of contamination, especially in hydroponic crops. Reinforced periodic cleaning and disinfection of equipment and surfaces, including reusable plastic containers, are required to prevent the survival and spread of pathogens. In processing plants, the implementation of environmental monitoring programs allows for: 1) identifying critical contamination points, 2) optimizing sampling, and 3) strengthening cleaning and disinfection protocols.
