ALGANUT Operational Group: New sustainable animal feed strategies based on algae to improve health, production efficiency and reduce emissions

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2025 -2029
  • Assigned Budget 599.539,00 €
  • Scope Supraautonómico
  • Autonomous community Cataluña; Galicia
  • Main source of financing CAP 2023-2027
Abstract
The livestock sector faces challenges such as reducing antibiotic use, decreasing its environmental footprint (methane emissions), and adding value to feed through enrichment with essential nutrients. Simultaneously, a transition towards more resilient and efficient production systems aligned with the circular economy and One Health is imperative. Digestive health, immune status, and feed efficiency are closely linked to the type and quality of dietary ingredients; therefore, R1 involves the development of an organic selenium source and other essential minerals from enriched macroalgae, demonstrating its bioavailability and its capacity to be transferred to the products.

R2 to develop a functional supplement for inclusion in ruminant diets, capable of reducing methane emissions.

R3 to study the effect of macroalgae supplementation in poultry systems, evaluating its impact on intestinal health, zootechnical performance and immunity.

R4 corresponds to the final validation phase with field tests in dairy cattle

R5 corresponds to the final validation phase with field tests on broiler chickens

R6 corresponds to the final validation phase with field tests on laying hens.

RD1: Maximum and effective dissemination and communication of project information to keep the target audience and society in general informed, in order to generate interest in these initiatives and their extrapolation to other autonomous communities.

RD2: Maximize the implementation/transfer in the sector(s) of the solutions developed and achieve the maximum dissemination and impact of the project results on end users.

Description
  • R1: Development of a source of organic selenium and other essential minerals for animal feed based on marine macroalgae.
  • R2: Development of a macroalgae-based additive/supplement for cattle that contributes to the reduction of methane emissions without compromising animal health and production indicators.
  • R3: Development of a macroalgae-based additive/supplement for birds that contributes to the improvement of animal health and production.
  • R4: Development of final formulations of macroalgae supplements for application in dairy cattle with high technological and commercial potential, integrating the best results obtained in previous phases.
  • R5: Development of final formulations of macroalgae supplements for application in broiler chickens, with high technological and commercial potential, integrating the best results obtained in previous phases.
  • R6: Development of final formulations of macroalgae supplements for application in laying hens, with high technological and commercial potential, integrating the best results obtained in previous phases.

Objectives

ALGANUT proposes an innovative strategy to address the challenges of the livestock sector: improving animal health and production efficiency, reducing antibiotic use, mitigating environmental impact (methane emissions), and adding value through enrichment with essential nutrients. It focuses on the comprehensive use of marine macroalgae as functional ingredients, paying particular attention to their role as an organic source of selenium (Se) and other minerals, as well as their beneficial effects on gut health, immunity, and product quality.
