Abstract

The Task Force will begin working on beef, a key sector for the Galician rural economy, also linked to distinctive quality indicators, but which is currently an unstructured and unprofessional sector compared to other sectors in the Galician countryside.

Description

The Model Network Operational Group aims to analyze Galicia's production models in each of the most relevant sectors in our field.

Following this analysis, a pilot network of farms will be established, allowing for the ongoing collection of technical and economic data for monitoring production costs, which are key to ensuring the farms' economic viability. The beef sector chosen for the establishment of this pilot network is the beef sector.

Each Model Farm would represent the most common production system in Galicia (in terms of size, management, and yield), with similar characteristics in terms of income and costs; that is, the goal is to have a representative sample of the sector studied.

The GO will work together with livestock farmers to improve the technical and economic management of farms, promoting dynamics aimed at improving professionalism, which will translate into increased profitability and ensuring the viability of farms.

Description of activities
  • Define a typical production model for each of the most important livestock sectors in the Galician countryside.
  • Establish sectoral networks.
  • Calculate and analyze production costs for the beef sector.
Objectives
  • To characterize and analyze Galicia's production models in the most relevant sectors of the Galician countryside.
  • Improve the training of farm managers and agricultural advisors to contribute to improving the efficiency of production processes and economic profitability, while ensuring less dependence on external inputs and thus achieving a production process with a smaller environmental footprint.
  • Increase transparency in trade relations between links in the food chain, strengthening producers' negotiating capacity through the use of production costs as an indicator for contract negotiation.
  • Provide updated and verified information to the Galician Food Chain Observatory and the Agri-Food Chain and Unfair Commercial Practices Control Service of the Regional Ministry of Rural Environment so that they can better perform their oversight functions and assist in compliance with the Food Chain Law.
  • Contribute to the digitalization of the Galician beef production sector and promote the use of the Conta Carne cost calculation application among livestock farmers.
Results
  • Define typical production models in Galicia for each of the most relevant livestock sectors.
  • To launch a network of model farms that meet the standards defined as typical of the Galician beef production system.
  • Conduct three production cost studies (one per year) for beef cattle in order to provide reliable information that will increase the level of transparency in commercial relations and ensure compliance with the Food Chain Law.
  • Provide useful information for livestock farmers that enables improved technical and economic management of these crops, ensuring their viability and sustainability.
  • Improve the Conta Carne app to provide it with features for improving comparisons, facilitating the generation of metrics and reports.
  • Contribute to the fulfillment of one of the measures provided for in the Strategy for the Dynamization of the Galician Meat Sector.

Once the project is completed, the network of pilot farms will be made available to the Administration so that, if necessary, they can continue the network or expand it to other livestock sectors such as dairy cattle, sheep and goats, and pigs.
