Operational Group: Introduction of Spirulina Cultivation in Catalan Society

Description

Spirulina is the most cultivated microalgae in the world, with over 5,000 tons cultivated annually and a demand that continues to grow. Catalonia imports 100% of this product, and this project sought to address this shortage in the productive sector by developing production projects adapted to Catalan weather and cultural conditions.

In this context, the key words of the production systems developed are:

  • A product that promotes a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Organic crops integrated into the environment.
  • Positive balance of CO2 capture throughout the process.
  • Automatic and intelligent crops.
  • Local marketing, or even non-existent, in the case of crops grown for personal consumption.
Objectives
  • Introduce spirulina cultivation as a sustainable production model within Catalan agriculture.
  • Introduce spirulina as a food that can be produced at home for easy self-sufficiency and contributes to combating climate change.
Results

The theoretical basis for implementing a pilot plant allows us to conclude that: Spirulina is a food that contributes to the health of people and the environment.

Catalonia has the meteorological and cultural conditions to become a leading country in spirulina production. Establishing a spirulina producer is difficult, as there are no specific regulations in Catalonia and the government is still unsure how to respond in these cases.

Sensors and automation can greatly simplify production processes and crop management. Production costs for home-grown crops can be lower than the typical retail price.
