BIO C Operational Group: Bioinnovative solutions for organic cereals, strengthening biodiversity
- Type Operational group
- Status In progress
- Execution 2024 -2025
- Assigned Budget 224.878,86 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Andalucía
- Project website GO BIO C
The project is expected to select traditional cereal varieties best suited to the area, with the possibility of subsequent multiplication both on the pilot farm and by participating farmers. In addition, the carbon sequestered by these traditional varieties under ecological management will be physically and economically quantified, according to the evaluated scenarios.
A bird census will be conducted in plots of traditional and modern varieties, as well as natural vegetation, allowing for an assessment of the diversity of the fauna. The goal is also to produce bakery products with higher nutritional quality and consumer acceptance, as well as to select varieties that are more suitable for feeding local equine livestock. Finally, an increase in plant biodiversity in the study area is expected, contributing to the strengthening of local ecosystems.
The "Bio C. Bioinnovative solutions for organic cereals strengthening biodiversity" project responds to the objectives of the European Green Deal, which seeks a climate-neutral continent by 2050, and to the "Farm to Fork" and "EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030" strategies. These strategies prioritize increasing organic agricultural land to 25% and improving biodiversity. Organic production is essential to achieving this due to its low environmental impact and its capacity to conserve biodiversity.
The project also addresses the growing demand for organic products and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use of traditional cereal varieties adapted to climate change. At the regional level, it focuses on extensive dryland organic crops in Andalusia, where biodiversity loss and the need for sustainable practices affect productivity. Funded by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Andalusian Regional Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), it seeks to promote sustainability and innovation in the sector.
The legislative context, opportunities such as the carbon credit market, and the need to diversify the use of currently used seeds are driving this project, which aims to benefit Andalusian farmers through a sustainable model.
The "Bio C. Bioinnovative solutions for organic cereals strengthening biodiversity" project seeks to improve the sustainability and biodiversity of extensive dryland organic crops in Andalusia by recovering traditional cereal varieties and implementing environmental improvements. These actions promote decarbonization, diversify the agricultural landscape, and create new business opportunities, including potential in the carbon offset market.
