Description

The opportunity generated by the SUPERFOOD TECH project is applicable to the hundreds of thousands of hectares affected by mineral and nutritional degradation, and the proposed solution is equally valid regardless of the affected regions, crops, soil types, or identified deficiencies. - The technical solution is valid for fruit and vegetable crops and the processing industry. - Likewise, the solution is applicable under any environmental and climatic condition, allowing it to be used in multiple areas, types of affected soil, crops, or management. - The solution proposed in this project will result in a significant, quantifiable increase in productivity and sustainability, accessible to any affected farmer nationwide. This is, in our opinion, a necessary condition for achieving true involvement of those affected in solving the problem. - Consumers demand healthy foods with recommended nutrient and mineral content, in sufficient doses that are compatible with their current diet and lifestyle, which prevent them from achieving the recommended diets for a healthy diet. - This project arises from the needs detected from those affected and users demanding products enriched in a natural, original way
and healthy.

Innovative project of general supra-regional interest based on:

  • Improving production processes to increase the "functional quality" of fruit and vegetable products and the products resulting from their processing.
  • The biotechnological creation of mineral-enriched foods through innovative fertilization techniques and post-harvest applications of fruits and vegetables by introducing chelated surface mineral solutions.
  • Improving the nutritional quality of fruit and vegetable crops to increase production value by enhancing their nutritional quality.
  • Reduction of impacts and production losses resulting from mineral and nutritional deficiencies in farmland caused by climate change.
  • Climate change mitigation: action on soils to improve crop agronomy and increase CO2 and GHG consumption and sequestration.
  • Generation of innovative, nutritionally fortified products, especially with minerals, to respond to new consumer demands and contribute to promoting the adoption of healthier lifestyles by transforming the primary production system and the food industry.
Objectives

This innovative project, called SUPERFOOD BIOTECH, aims to increase mineralization, promote soil-plant microbiome symbiosis, and enrich agricultural soils with organic matter in a sustainable, continuous, and complete manner, providing all the necessary nutrients.

  • An alternative for Spanish fruit and vegetable producers to diversify into a new category of products with high added value and tailored to consumer needs.
  • Direct study of technical-economic validation through the generation of 3Ms (Minerals + Microorganisms + Organic Matter) by microorganism-microalgae consortia on the farm to obtain bio-enriched fruit and vegetable products in high concentrations.
  • Quantification of savings in electricity and water consumption in soil regeneration processes (3Ms) and in the process of obtaining fruit and vegetable superfoods.
  • Identification of the transformation processes of fresh bio-enriched products and evaluation of the use of SDRs from industrial transformation processes on the farm as a contribution to FMC (microorganism-microalgae consortia) cultivation tanks.
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, comprehensive study of bioeconomic impact, and selection of projects promoted by young people and women in rural areas for the establishment of bio-enriched fruit and vegetable production companies.

Added value will be created through a closer relationship between research and agricultural and forestry practices, and by promoting greater use of available knowledge. The application of real-world knowledge, reported and executed at TRL technology levels close to 7-8-9, will allow for the launch of more innovative projects and generate new areas of knowledge that are so necessary for end-users and research centers in this field. This added value stems from SUPERFOOD BIOTECH, but does not end with the project's completion. Green industries and biotechnology for environmental bioremediation are a thriving reality promoted by the EU itself. The generation and transfer of knowledge is guaranteed by the implementation of this project, which will allow farmers and agro-industries to maximize their value and improve their productivity and sustainable profitability, and will allow research teams to access a broad network of experimental and demonstration sites thanks to the business and consumer organizations involved.

Results

Expected results:

  • Achieving productivity increases, improved quality and value: 3% woody crops and 5% horticultural crops
  • Characterization of biotechnological solution 1 combinations of microorganisms-microalgae >300% potential bioavailability of nutrients for crops (biofertilizer).
  • Software for obtaining final foods with specific nutrient enrichments, complete technical management for agronomic production, and breeding consortia. - Pilot system for generating and enriching depleted soils to obtain highly bio-enriched products (>20%) (superfoods). - Industrial plant testing for processing bio-enriched products.
  • Demonstration on real farms to validate the project.
  • Confirmation of performance data and regeneration of impoverished soils.
  • Savings in water consumption >36% and energy >36% compared to 3 conventional crop bio-enrichment media.
  • Average increase in valorization of €240/ha. This is solely for byproducts obtained through the biotechnological reuse of SDRs and biomass.
  • Production 1 combinations of microorganisms-microalgae of high commercial value for use by microalgae producing industries.
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions by more than 1 million tonnes T/year (CO2).
