Description

The LIFE Innocereal project aims to facilitate connections between the links in the cereal value chain, creating certification systems for low-emission production, demonstrating their benefits for the entire supply chain, and increasing the added value of the final product (bread, pasta, beer).

The project team will create an ecosystem throughout the entire grain production chain, demonstrating high standards of sustainability and competitiveness at all stages of production in the flour, malting, and bakery industries.

Contextual description

Sustainable food systems and supply chains play a crucial role in ensuring food security. Cereal production is key to this, as it forms the basis of the human diet. Europe produces around 280 million tons of cereals annually, of which wheat accounts for 46%.

One of the greatest challenges for the European cereals industry is connecting the different sectors of the value chain to meet the 2030 climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies established in EU policy (e.g., the European Green Deal, the Farm to Fork Strategy). Achieving a circular and carbon-neutral agricultural sector requires investment in solutions that connect industry players to close the cereal production loop, thereby ensuring and promoting food security and the transition to sustainable agriculture.

Objectives
  • Connected grain supply chain that enables the implementation of innovative best practices.
  • A quality and sustainability certification to improve the competitiveness of sustainable grain producers.
  • Mitigating the carbon footprint of cereal production in Europe.
  • Improve knowledge of durum wheat, soft wheat, and barley varieties to improve adaptation to climate change.
  • Building knowledge at EU level to help promote supportive policies.
A communication plan, including a manual of good agricultural practices.
  • A close-to-market plan to demonstrate the potential for replication at EU level.
Results
  • Connecting the grain supply chain to socioeconomic benefits.
  • Improving the environmental sustainability of cereal production.
