Biodiversity Foundation AgriConCiencia Project: Demonstration of best agricultural practices based on scientific evidence to mitigate the sector's impact on the Mar Menor

Description

The project promotes governance between the agricultural sector, farm managers, and the scientific and technical sector through the co-innovation of good agricultural practices (hedge planting, pruning management, crop rotation, etc.) to mitigate the impacts of agricultural intensification.

  • It will also evaluate these practices and implement them on more than 600 hectares of citrus, horticultural, and dryland crops, while promoting green jobs and new business models.
Description of activities
  • Co-innovation for the design and implementation of best agricultural practices and nature-based solutions on 604 hectares of citrus, horticultural, and dryland crops.
  • Pilot tests based on soil management, implementation of plant elements and cover, crop rotation and diversification, restoration to dry land, and wildlife management.
  • Cost-effectiveness analysis of agricultural practices under a technical, economic, and environmental characterization and the creation of new business models with a gender perspective.
  • Transfer of results and training to other stakeholders to replicate agricultural practices that prove most effective and most well-received by the sector.
Objectives

Mitigate the effects of conventional agricultural intensification in the Campo de Cartagena region in order to establish a sustainable balance between agricultural activity and the preservation of the Mar Menor.

Its specific objectives include:

  • Define the governance model between the agricultural and scientific sectors. Identify, evaluate, and implement agricultural practices that restore soil functionality, reducing fertilizer use and limiting soil erosion and runoff, enhancing ecosystem services, and reducing pesticide use.
  • Promote the creation of green jobs, capacity building, the development of new business models, and the dissemination and transfer of knowledge.
Beneficiaries
  • Asociación Interprofesional de Limón y Pomelo (AILIMPO)
