Description
The project uses silver nanoparticles combined with biotechnology to eliminate viruses and viroids in apricot trees, improving their health and quality. It aims to reduce chemical treatments, increase the sustainability of the crop, and evaluate the effectiveness of the compound "Argovit" against pathogens.
Contextual description
There is a very serious problem with viral and viroid infections in fruit trees, resulting in the spread of infected plants and consequent losses in quality and production. It would be crucial to have certification programs that require nurseries to supply pathogen-free stone fruit trees. This has been done for years in citrus and grapevines. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop biotechnological approaches that allow for the production of healthy plants in order to promote the creation of certification programs for pathogen-free Prunus species. Additionally, climate change will necessitate the development of fruit trees better adapted to abiotic stresses. In this regard, it is important to have rootstocks tolerant to adverse climatic conditions.
Results
We have explored different approaches to eliminate viruses and viroids from infected apricot trees. We have obtained positive results for both pathogens using thermotherapy combined with in vitro demeristem culture. The use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), a very novel approach, has yielded positive results in obtaining plants free of Sharka virus. Treatments with AgNPs in plants infected with Sharka virus produced oxidative stress manifested by a significant increase in lipid peroxidation (an indicator of cell membrane damage).
