Among the cooperation projects co-financed by the Basque Government and the EAFRD, UAGA is participating as a collaborating partner in Apatxa, a project on regenerative rotational grazing (RR grazing). Led by Lursare Ekosistemas, the operational group consists of four livestock farms, along with Neiker, and its collaborating partners include Abere and UAGA.
To carry out the project, four pilot projects are being developed using different production models representative of the Basque Country: conventional beef cattle, organic beef cattle, organic beef sheep, and dairy cattle. The first three are implementing RR grazing, two of them using electric grazers, and one using virtual fencing technology (Nofence). The fourth farm is a farm with extensive grazing experience and extensive historical data, and work is being done on how to collect these data to enable short- to medium-term grazing proposals.
The project's objective is to establish a collaborative framework for implementing RR grazing on farms in the Basque Country. To this end, the following activities will be carried out: training farmers and technicians in RR grazing; implementing RR grazing with native breeds with guidance; analyzing historical data to identify indicators for future digitalization tools; utilizing tools such as Nofence; fostering a network among farms to share grazing experiences; assessing commercial demand for a product based on RR grazing; and promoting and disseminating the project and its results.
