Description
Seafood can benefit from technological improvements applied to the valorization of fish discards, promoting their reuse and transformation.
Results
The ALIMAR project is being carried out in the Mar Menor lagoon, a study area where jellyfish blooms (Cotylorhiza tuberculata and Rhizostoma pulmo) and other species, such as the trumpet snail, have been observed since approximately the 1990s. The identification and quantification of the biochemical compounds contained in these species will advance our understanding of their potential uses. Viable samples of chemical compounds such as collagen and chitin have been obtained for use in nutrients, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, and other resulting products of commercial interest. The project is now focused on exploiting the results to conduct scaling studies and explore technology transfer possibilities.
