Biodiversity Foundation Project INNOAGRO 3.0: Innovation in sustainable agricultural and livestock farms

Description

The trend toward more natural, environmentally friendly and rural-friendly food has inspired many farmers and ranchers to develop sustainable farm projects. These sustainable farms are more complex than conventional agricultural production, combining agricultural and livestock elements with new technologies, marketing, and the use of short channels. However, these innovative farms often fail to achieve high profitability, as in some cases, the innovators cannot find a successful role model to follow, given the lack of references. This, coupled with the lack of training and support programs like the one proposed by this project, means that many farmers and ranchers do not join the sustainable consumption trend.

Many innovative farmers have worked to redefine the competition between sustainable agriculture and industrial agriculture by introducing a new approach: instead of competing solely on products, they are expanding the competition to tourism, in other words, providing customers with a consumer experience. Therefore, this project embraces this principle and trains and advises agricultural businesses in the development and implementation of these types of consumer experiences.

The project will identify, organize, and characterize these new ways of competing in the market; it will develop a training and support program for farmers and ranchers to learn and implement these innovative ideas on their farms.

Description of activities

To this end, three distance learning courses will be offered, providing training in:

  • (1)Conversion of agricultural and livestock farms to sustainable practices;
  • (2) Innovation in sustainable agricultural and livestock farms: New ways to make farms profitable;
