SAMM_IRO Operational Group: Smart monitoring tools for irrigation and phytosanitary management in olive groves
- Type Operational group
- Status In progress
- Execution 2024 -2025
- Assigned Budget 297.514,67 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Andalucía
- Project website GO SAMM_IRO
The SAMM_IRO platform will provide real-time information on the climate-soil-plant context of olive cultivation at the right time, enabling rapid decision-making for the efficient management of water and nutrient resources. This will allow for optimized irrigation and plant health management, resulting in increased productivity for farmers.
The GO objectives will be achieved through a series of technological innovations planned for the project. These will be implemented during the execution of the different modules into which the future platform is structured. These modules will build a network of cutting-edge IoT sensors, which, together with remote sensing data, will feed a Big Data infrastructure.
And with the analytical tools made possible by this Big Data infrastructure (primarily AI/ML-based tools), descriptive and predictive models will be developed for olive grove irrigation and phytosanitary management. These components exist in other Smart-Sustainable Agriculture solutions, but the added value proposed by the GO lies fundamentally in how these various, already fairly common, components are articulated and in disseminating their main features among olive farmers.
These key aspects of disseminating Smart Agriculture components include the quality and quantity of sensors incorporated into IoT networks, the massive use of remote sensing data from public and open sources, the efficiency of storage in Big Data repositories, and the amount of information available for predictive models and the resulting increase in their quality that this makes possible.
- Review of scientific and technical literature. Identification of user needs and definition of system requirements.
- Selection of components for an IoT sensor network for comprehensive crop monitoring and deployment on planned farms.
- Big Data repository and development of fundamental and advanced analytics, as well as predictive models.
- Construction of the Knowledge Dissemination component Integration of the previous components and use of the prototype for crop monitoring in operational environments throughout the agricultural campaign.
- Evaluation activities Activities to disseminate the project and its results.
The main objective of the SAMM_IRO Operational Group is to provide the Andalusian olive oil sector with intelligent crop monitoring solutions based on IoT, Big Data, and AI, which will optimize phytosanitary and irrigation management of olive groves.
Based on these smart modules, Decision Support Systems (DSS) will be developed for olive growers to ensure that decision-making in the areas referred to is carried out in an automated and as objective manner as possible, taking into consideration the extensive data set obtained by the aforementioned sensor networks.
