Abstract

The brine-focused project contributes to promoting the circular economy by creating a circular system for the valorisation and use of waste.

Description

The activities and results of the project allow the use of derivatives from the olive industry (brines, lyes and organic products) for livestock feed.

Description of activities
  • Literature search on the production and reuse of lye, followed by analysis and neutralization of samples with hydrochloric acid to convert them into brine.
  • Design of a flow chart and industrial equipment, a prototype will be developed and large-scale tests will be carried out.
  • Testing of absorbent resins for decolorizing brown brine, designing equipment and an industrial flow diagram.
  • Development of a prototype and industrial tests will be carried out, with necessary analysis and adjustments, establishing a protocol for brine conditioning and its use in olive fermentation.
  • Characterization of olive leaves and pitted pomace, designing silage formulations. Trials will be carried out on sheep and lambs, producing industrial silages and analyzing their nutrition.
  • Manufacturing of complementary concentrates and control feeds, evaluating the influence of polyphenols on sheep immunity and manufacturing nutritional cubes with quality controls.
  • Analysis of polyphenols in olive waters and their application in animal feed.
  • Obtaining and analyzing water samples, carrying out pilot tests for the separation of polyphenols and defining an industrial protocol.
  • Large-scale polyphenol recovery and lamb fattening feed will be designed, carrying out intensive fattening trials and nutritional and granulometry analyses.
  • Evaluation of commercial data and the influence of polyphenols on lamb immunity, meat quality and shelf life.
  • Promotion and dissemination of project results through launch.
Objectives

Contribute to the promotion of the circular economy by creating a circular system for the valorisation and use of waste such as brines, lyes and organic products derived from the olive industry.

Results
  1. Neutralization of waters rich in NaOH (lye) by reaction with HCl until total conversion into NaCl (brines).
  2. Clarification of brown brines with adsorption resins and reuse in fermentation and shipping.
  3. Obtaining an innovative method for using organic matter from olive oil industries that is viable for feeding livestock.
  4. Use of olive leaves and pitted pomace for silage for animal feed.
  5. Obtaining polyphenols from waste produced by washing absorbent resins used in brine clarification.
  6. Use of polyphenols obtained in animal feed.
