UAIBIF Operational Group: Integrated Forest Biomass Utilization Unit

  • Type Operational group
  • Execution 2017
  • Assigned Budget 3.487.018,00 €
  • Scope Supraautonómico
  • Autonomous community Asturias, Principado de; Galicia
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2014-2020
Description

This Operational Group aims to design and develop an integrated forest biomass harvesting unit adapted to the forest environment in the Iberian Peninsula, enabling a cost reduction in forest biomass collection by around 30-40% compared to the current cost.

Building on the innovative developments carried out by the Finnish firm Fixteri, the goal is to achieve an optimal design for forestry exploitation equipment that allows for simultaneous, more efficient and integrated processing of forest biomass with commercial wood operations for the bioenergy market.

This seeks to significantly reduce costs and provide a competitive advantage for companies in the sector and for the Spanish bioenergy industry in general.

Objectives
  • Allow the valorization of existing biomass that currently has no defined utilization circuit and that has no energy use due to its special characteristics.
  • The technical and economic feasibility of adaptations to pretreatment and thermal utilization processes will be assessed. The energy recovery of pruning biomass from agricultural (vineyards, olive trees, and fruit trees) and urban (pruning biomass from parks and gardens) sources will be facilitated.
  • Strengthen the economic model, making it more sustainable through the efficient use of residual biomass and the promotion of business innovation.
