Description

Quinoa is an extensive crop of Andean origin that stands out for being a complete, balanced and nutritious food. It does not contain gluten and contains most of the essential amino acids.

In recent years it has experienced growing international demand for its unique nutritional characteristics.

Objectives

The project aims to obtain short-cycle quinoa materials with agronomic characteristics adapted to Andalusia, which also have large white grain sizes and no saponins.

The specific objectives of the project, among others, would be:

  • Identification of hybrids using molecular markers.
  • Selection of materials that meet the characteristics demanded by companies, generating new varieties of quinoa that are more productive and of higher quality.
  • Development of molecular markers to identify new varieties and defend their patents.

The Operational Group has a clear applied focus, making new quinoa materials available to the company to promote its cultivation in Andalusia and its export to countries with similar agro-climatic characteristics.
