Description
Design and evaluation of a systematic mechanism for promoting the cultivation and use of legumes adapted to the needs of all stakeholders in the animal feed chain.
Objectives
- To analyze the situation and availability of seeds of the legumes under study (broad bean, soybean and pea) and the companies that market them, as well as the tests and evaluation protocols that are being carried out for said legumes.
- Diagnose the needs of agents in the animal feed chain and the barriers to the incorporation of legumes in feed.
- Agree and validate a common protocol for variety testing, contribute to the diversification of food systems in Spain, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the environmental impacts of agricultural production and feed supply chains.
Results
- Progress in reconnecting the animal feed chain in Spain to boost legume cultivation and thus reduce external dependence on protein for our livestock feed.
- The Group for the Evaluation of New Varieties of Extensive Crops in Spain (GENVCE) has reactivated the legume trial network, providing continuity and sustainability to the results and work carried out by INPULSE.
- Diagnosis of the needs of the various stakeholders in the chain, listing of available seeds and the companies that market them, and establishment of a common variety testing protocol.
