AGRIREGENCARBON Operational Group: Validation of a methodological proposal for regenerative carbon agriculture

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2024 -2026
  • Assigned Budget 486.756,00 €
  • Scope Supraautonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía; Aragón; Cataluña
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
  • Project website GO AGRIREGENCARBON
Abstract

The main result of the AgriRegenCarbon operating group will be the development of a methodology for generating carbon emission offsets in the agricultural sector. The main beneficiaries of this result will be, on the one hand, the farmers themselves who wish to start working with carbon emission offsets from regenerative agriculture, and also, the global population, as it will have a direct impact on the permanent capture of carbon in the soil, reducing emissions.

Description

The regenerative agriculture methodology resulting from this project will be available and accessible to any sector stakeholder who wishes to apply it, thus being of public benefit and aiming to be a driving force for change in the current agricultural landscape by turning an apparent problem into a transcendental and disruptive solution for the fight against the climate crisis.

Description of activities
  • Activity. Developing the preliminary project with different scenarios.
  • Activity: Establishment of a baseline, through land sampling, for farms for their subsequent inclusion in the Carbon Farming program. Activity: Proposal of a technical roadmap for the implementation of more sustainable practices and agreement with farmers on the project scenario.
  • Activity: Development of the PDD and template for signing the Carbon Farming program entry contract.
  • Activity: Preparation of an economic and financial analysis taking into account the different budgetary options.
  • Activity: Gathering data related to logistics, challenges, and areas for improvement in the sampling process. Activity: Preparing a report analyzing the economic and logistical feasibility of the proposed monitoring mechanism.
  • Activity. Analysis, validation, and certification of the methodology against ISO 14064-2.
  • Activity. Analysis and preparation of the report on the suitability of the methodological proposal, in relation to the MITECO volunteer and the QUALITY criteria.
  • Activity: Prospecting for potential clients and presenting the compensation proposal using the generated credits.
  • Activity. Achieving a pre-purchase agreement for the credits to be generated.
  • Activity: Reading, critique, and review, identifying weaknesses and suggestions for improvement.
  • Activity. Integration of improvement proposals into the methodology, iteration meetings to ensure the proposals are integrated into the methodology.
  • Activity: Reading, analysis, and research of available methods for monitoring biodiversity in agroecosystems.
  • Activity: Validation of the suitability of the proposed methods with the farmers participating in the program.
  • Activity. Final report, economic analysis of the proposed methods, demonstration graphs, data sources.
  • Activity: Compilation of data from online databases available for the project's properties.
  • Activity: Preparation of the comparative report.
Objectives

The main objective of the AgriRegenCarbon operational group is to establish a pilot project to validate the technical, regulatory, and economic feasibility of a methodology for generating carbon offsets in the agricultural sector. To achieve this, it relies on the implementation of regenerative agriculture as a vehicle for capturing carbon dioxide and helping mitigate the climate crisis, with agriculture as part of the solution.

Results

The main expected outcome is the development of a methodology for generating carbon offsets in the agricultural sector that is accessible to any sector stakeholder who wishes to apply it and that will be a driving force for change in the current agricultural landscape by turning an apparent problem into a transcendental and disruptive solution for the fight against the climate crisis.
