OLEOPRECISION Operational Group: Modernizing Sunflower Cultivation in Spain through the application of precision agriculture techniques and decision-making tools.

  • Type Operational group
  • Execution 2019 -2021
  • Assigned Budget 599.644,16 €
  • Scope Supraautonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía; Castilla y León; Extremadura
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2014-2020

Description

The project aims to increase the productivity, profitability, sustainability and adaptation to climate change of sunflower cultivation by developing a predictive model incorporated into an intuitive and freely accessible decision-making app.

Objectives

1. Promote solutions to modernize oilseed cultivation, identify the problems and advantages that will arise in the crop when implementing new technologies that are present on the market but difficult to access by the primary sector (farmers) due to their high cost, in such a way that they allow for sustainable improvements in crop productivity and quality, increase its competitiveness, and provide added value to the agri-food chain.
In this case, the project development aims to bring together all stakeholders involved in the production and processing of the product, enabling the development of useful information related to crop management using cutting-edge technology.
To precisely focus this objective, well-defined lines of work will be carried out that will serve to later define the project, such as:
• Assessment of variable seeding technology using GPS positioning based on terrain monitoring and creation of maps with seeding instructions.
• Assessment of variable fertilization technology using GPS positioning based on terrain monitoring and creation of maps with fertilization prescriptions.
• Evaluation of new techniques in microbiology applied to oilseed crops.
• Evaluation of new soil water monitoring techniques for efficient irrigation management.
2. Various reports will be prepared, grouped into crop agronomy and industrial processing, where all existing information will be evaluated from a scientific and experimental perspective in the field, related to oilseeds and other herbaceous crops, studying the solutions that have been developed for these crops and being able to evaluate their possible adaptation to oilseed cultivation in order to define a project with the most cutting-edge technologies that will result in their modernization.
3. A national experimental field will subsequently be established to test different strategies, hypotheses, and crop management systems. This will allow us to analyze how new technologies considered precision agriculture can support the modernization of these crops and adapt them to improve productivity and quality, enabling greater profitability and an increase in surface area throughout the autonomous communities.
4. Develop a technical itinerary for cultures by defining success factors.
5. As a final step, a comprehensive technology transfer process must be carried out so that the Oleoprecisión project has the necessary impact on all project members.

Results
  • Modernization of sunflower cultivation in Spain based on empirical and scientific data.
  • Updating the physical and biological parameters of sunflower cultivation and improving its quality and productivity in Spain.
  • AquaCrop simulation model (FAO) based on historical and empirical data, Creation of a freely accessible app tool for decision-making.
  • National management and planning guidelines for sunflower cultivation, reducing the environmental impact of modernized crops.
  • Transfer of the results obtained.
