Under the motto Leaving no one behind, FAO will celebrate World Food Day on October 16. To commemorate this anniversary, on Monday, October 17, the Polytechnic University of Madrid and its Higher Technical School of Agronomic, Food and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB), together with Grupo Editorial Agrícola- Henar Comunicación, organize the gathering “Towards an education allied with sustainable food production”.

The crucial role of food production was evident during the COVID-19 crisis, which revealed, in the toughest moments of confinement, the importance of society having solid and safe production systems and a food chain. effective, which guarantee the provision of food in quantity, variety and quality, even in the most difficult times. Many citizens then discovered the excellent work of our professionals in the sector.

Today we find ourselves immersed in a multidimensional crisis that the war in Ukraine has only exacerbated, clearly highlighting the global interconnection in the production and distribution of food, with consequences that worryingly affect its availability.

The rise in food prices has once again raised awareness among many citizens, but they are unaware of the real extent of the problem. We face global challenges with still unpredictable consequences, and society must be aware and sensitive so that we truly do not leave anyone behind.

In the long term, the solution will come from science-based knowledge of food production and the deployment of leadership in all sectors involved. In this task, it is urgent to start by raising awareness among the youngest, those who will soon make up the society of the future that will have to respond to world problems. Dissemination activities in all types of media and in study centers, and the inclusion in teaching materials of this sensitivity towards sustainable food production, are unavoidable.

All this will be put on the table in the discussion on the 17th, which will feature various experts in the field.
