Currently, the crop rotations carried out by most farms in Álava consist of a very limited number of crops: cereals, potatoes, beets, rapeseed, sunflowers, and corn are the farms' main crops. Crops that have been a significant player in the sector for many years have suffered from price volatility in recent years, forcing many farms to consider continuing their production.
This situation has been particularly aggravated in the cultivation of sugar beets, where the collapse in sales prices and difficulties in negotiating with the industry have led to a sharp decline in the number of hectares under cultivation.
Likewise, the challenges of the CAP impose greater environmental demands, and new incentives are needed for farmers to rotate crops that are attractive due to their profitability and future potential.
The project aims to propose value-added crops whose adaptation to our agroclimatic conditions will be tested by farmers, enabling a social, agronomic, and culinary evaluation of the crops.
The first project tasks have begun. The first coordination meeting was held, during which the organization of tasks and the next steps to be taken were finalized. In addition, available information on the alternative crops to be analyzed was compiled.
The project focuses on diversifying crop rotations on farms in Alava by introducing value-added crops that take advantage of the farms' full potential and address the new challenges of the CAP and market demand.
