Environmental concern has been a preoccupation in our school communities for years: not only in terms of curricular content or social awareness, but also in terms of a genuine commitment from the administration and faculty to impact our students, families, and teachers and foster their transformation into agents of change in different areas. Previous E+ projects allowed us to meet partners with shared ideas and concerns, which inevitably materialized in this project. Traditional approaches to climate change and sustainability have proven insufficient, and permaculture concepts and practices opened the door to new ways of addressing challenges: developing practical activities and transforming learning spaces were two of the needs identified to transform learning and teaching activities in our schools. Some partners had experience applying permaculture in their curricula, others used school gardens as learning spaces, and still others possessed the necessary theoretical and practical experience to share it, but no one summarized all of this in a single project. This project allowed us to compile partial contributions so that all partners could reach the broadest possible audience.
The development of activities will be directly related to the Permaculture curriculum and the expected outcomes of the project. On the one hand, the need to adapt existing curricular approaches to sustainability and environmental awareness to the unique perspective of Permaculture, with its shift in mindset, will lead us to redefine the lessons in which we begin to introduce related topics.
At the same time, the idea of using the environment (outdoor spaces) as learning spaces will lead us to reimagine the relationship between students and teachers in the classroom, as well as the way lessons are delivered. On the other hand, the need for research to design and create the expected artifacts (project outcomes) will open the opportunity for our students to collaborate in the process through a process of inquiry that will lead to a practical learning experience that will contribute to greater understanding and deeper knowledge.
With all this in mind, we will:
- Training teachers in Permaculture.
- Organize workshops on research techniques with students and faculty.
- Teach basic Permaculture concepts using multimedia support to present to students.
- Adapt classes to open spaces (garden, playground, etc.) as learning spaces.
- Organize workshops on research techniques with students.
- Organize workshops for students on using web applications to design and build web pages.
- Organize workshops for students on the use of digital tools to create mobile applications.
- Design and build a web platform for learning Permaculture concepts.
- Design and build a mobile app with information and practical examples of Permaculture initiatives in partner countries.
- Edit and publish an e-book on Permaculture.
To contribute to the creation of a clean and sustainable environment, we seek to integrate students with nature, allowing them to understand its importance and their interrelationship with it. They need to explore learning environments outside of school and develop key competencies. We enjoy creating extracurricular content on environmental education through permaculture. In short: Observe students in a diverse, aesthetic, healthy, and authentic learning space, using the garden as an opportunity for learning and learning, integrating gardening and cooking activities into various key learning areas (such as art, math, or reading), and fostering community collaboration in classes. Introduce and disseminate the concept of permaculture, allowing for a better understanding of the ecosystem (its importance, the challenges facing the planet, and awareness and respect for it), and the concept of a sustainable environment, to contribute to the protection of nature. Program a variety of student outcomes, facilitating teamwork and cooperative learning activities, enhancing critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making, and achieving greater self-esteem through a sense of participation and achievement.
In addition to the partially supportive teaching materials developed to introduce students to the basic concepts of Permaculture, and taking into account the different characteristics of the partners...
- A web platform to support learning about permaculture concepts.
- A mobile app with information and practical examples of permaculture initiatives in partner countries.
- An e-book on permaculture.
- A drawing and coloring book for distribution.
- A basic draft of a permaculture curriculum to be further developed in Türkiye.
