AGROALNEXT Project: A new generation antioxidant for the food industry

  • Type Project
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Navarra, Comunidad Foral de
  • Main source of financing NextGenerationEU

Description
Starting with an innovative ingredient obtained through a lignin depolymerization process, this project focuses on studying its functionality as a food ingredient with antioxidant potential. In a context where conventional antioxidants face regulatory and efficacy limitations, this project has sought to validate its antioxidant activity in real food matrices and define a regulatory roadmap for its future approval as a food additive.
Contextual description
In a context where conventional antioxidants face regulatory and efficacy limitations, this project aims to validate their antioxidant activity in real food matrices and define the regulatory roadmap for their future approval. This initiative promotes the transfer of natural and effective solutions, aligned with market demands and public health concerns.
Results
The antioxidant capacity of OHRIGINS™ has been proven in a food matrix to be equivalent to the commercial antioxidant EDTA. Regulatory strategy in accordance with EFSA regulations includes compositional and genotoxicity characterization and documentation of the production process. The ingredient is conditioned for application in food matrices. A techno-economic study and production cost calculation confirm the industrialization potential of OHRIGINS™ technology. Industrial scaling has been achieved up to TRL 7.
