AGROALNEXT CEBOLLEDO Project: Evaluation of the feasibility of portable NIR technology for determining quality parameters in onions

  • Type Project

Description
The study proposes the use of a portable tool based on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, supported by predictive mathematical models, to estimate critical quality parameters in onions.
Contextual description
Onion quality is determined by key parameters such as pungency, soluble solids content (°Brix), and dry matter. Being able to assess these parameters quickly, non-destructively, and reliably, both in the field and post-harvest, represents a significant challenge for the agri-food sector.
Results
Quantification of pyruvic acid, °Brix, and moisture in onion leaves during the growing cycle. Quantification of pyruvic acid, °Brix, and moisture in onion bulbs. Measurement of NIR spectra in leaves and bulbs via surface sampling without sample destruction.
