Description
Transfer to the sector of new apple varieties adapted to climate change and resistant to diseases, improvement of infrastructure at the Apple Germplasm Bank
Contextual description
The apple sector in Asturias must adapt to climate change, which can compromise flowering and increase the incidence of pests. This requires developing new disease-resistant varieties with lower chilling hour requirements and defining rootstocks and cultivation techniques adapted to warmer climates. Furthermore, there are plans to revive the currently declining table apple crop by introducing improved varieties that combine resistance, quality, and shelf life, ensuring sustainable production, competitiveness, and the preservation of traditional varieties.
Results
Two new varieties of Asturian table apples and four new varieties of cider apples resistant to diseases and with low or medium chilling requirements have been registered with the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) as protected varieties. This information has been disseminated to the sector through technical workshops and trade fairs. Best practices for cider apple cultivation have been defined and shared through technical and training field workshops, as well as regional events and trade fairs, generating significant interest.
