The main objective of this project's activities is to obtain data that will allow us to understand the viability of woody energy crops in the current biofuel landscape. In addition, we will attempt to gather data on the potential use of biomass gasification as a supplement to greenhouse vegetable production, which can be applied to other fields with similar characteristics.
For this reason, the main results expected from the project are:
- Establishment of action models that optimize production by improving the efficiency of water and nutrient use in woody energy crops.
- Establishment of action guidelines for reforested pine forests that lead to soil conservation and sustainable management of the system.
- Calculation of the carbon footprint of biomass-producing activities in crops and pine forest reforestation. Calculation of economic, energy, CO2 emissions, and mineral nutrient balances.
- Identification and conservation of the best varieties (genotypes) that have generated high production.
- Setting up the appropriate work dynamics to produce a plant suitable for industrial use.
- Improved efficiency of pellet production in the factory.
- Quantifying the quantity and quality of vegetable crops in a biomass-heated greenhouse. Cost-benefit analysis.
- Evaluation, from a technical and environmental perspective, of the actions required to implement economically viable measures for biomass gasification, thereby generating valuable information for the installation of industrial-scale plants.
The most important activities being carried out are the following:
- Selection, propagation and cultivation of outstanding genotypes in experimental cultivation plots.
- Actions in reforestation pine forests with clear evidence of stagnation in growth.
- Energy optimization in pellet manufacturing.
- Development of biomass gasification generators with thermal and electrical energy utilization.
- Gasifier design for low-scale electrical power.
- Dissemination of results at trade shows and on partner websites.
The project's main objectives are to promote the use of renewable woody biomass in rural areas, thereby generating a productive agricultural system that can be profitable through the use of highly productive and soil-friendly genotypes. The resulting biomass can be transformed into pellets, with improvements to the manufacturing process being studied. Furthermore, the project aims to optimize small-scale gasification of the pellets obtained, which would allow electricity generation in a vegetable greenhouse, making this a good option to complement energy use in agricultural complexes.
