Artificial Intelligence for Sierra Morena Lambs Quality Operational Group: Quality system for Sierra Morena lambs based on Artificial Intelligence technologies
- Type Operational group
- Status In progress
- Execution 2022 -2024
- Assigned Budget 277.718,64 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Andalucía
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
- Project website GO QUALITY LAMBS
The objective of this project is to apply Artificial Intelligence to the sheep typing process, covering weight, sex, health, and genetics, all under conditions that are profitable for the cooperatives and animal welfare for the lambs.
Specifically, the aim is to develop an automated system that, by analyzing conventional and thermal images, will: (1) classify animals according to their weight and suitability for meat production, (2) individually identify each lamb, and (3) measure its temperature for health monitoring purposes. A prototype will also be tested at a livestock cooperative in the Sierra Norte region of Seville.
The expected results represent a major technical innovation in the sector: in particular, they will streamline the weighing and classification process, which is key to increasing its economic efficiency and, consequently, improving the profit margins of manufacturing entities.
Information and communications technology-based tools will also be developed to provide users with immediate access to all data, which will improve herd management and facilitate adaptation to market demands, thereby improving the productivity and profitability of livestock farms.

Development of sheep identification, classification, and weighing systems based on convolutional neural networks. CNNs belong to the family of deep learning techniques and are specifically recommended for image analysis.
To achieve this, different types of digital cameras will be installed to capture snapshots of the animals and serve as a basis for training the neural network. Radiation sensors will also be used to determine the animals' temperatures.
Through the use of ICT, farmers will be provided with quality indicators for their lambs.
Apply Artificial Intelligence and ICT to the sheep quality system, specifically to the process of typing the livestock received from the farms associated with the cooperative, covering weight, sex, health and genetics, all under conditions of profitability for CorSevilla and animal welfare for the lambs, so that the efficiency achieved in the developed process also allows for the animals to be made available quickly and adapted to the different quality requirements of the current market and other potential markets.
