BIORUMIOLI Operational Group: Bioeconomic products derived from small ruminants through the revaluation of olive oil by-products
- Type Operational group
- Status In progress
- Execution 2022 -2024
- Assigned Budget 262.332,00 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Andalucía
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
- Project website GO BIORUMIOLI
The aim is to demonstrate that olive pulp can be incorporated into the diet of small ruminants, increasing the profitability of livestock farms and creating an alternative for the olive oil industry. This will lead to more efficient use of energy for byproduct management and the reduction of nitrous oxide and methane emissions from biomass burning. The application of the knowledge generated by the participating research organizations will provide a number of opportunities for the sector:
a) Economic return to primary producers (oil mills and farmers), after evaluating the technical feasibility of the treatment and the costs of valorizing the olive pulp for inclusion in goat diets.
b) Development of new technologically viable dairy products using goat's milk, with an additional benefit derived from feeding the animals olive pulp.
c) To understand consumers' preferences, acceptance, and willingness to pay for dairy products that incorporate bioeconomic preparations of olive oil by-products into their diet.
d) To understand the environmental impact of including olive oil by-products in the diet of small ruminants.
e) Ensure the traceability and information of new products provided to the consumer through the use of QR codes associated with bioeconomic and functional dairy products.
The project focuses on a) promoting a resource-efficient, economically viable, productive, and competitive agricultural sector that is low in greenhouse gas emissions, climate-friendly and resilient to climate change, and in harmony with the essential natural resources on which agriculture depends; b) contributing to a stable and sustainable supply of food for livestock and humans; c) improving processes aimed at environmental protection; d) bridging the gap between scientific research and the needs of the agricultural and food sectors by creating links between cutting-edge knowledge and technologies and farmers (producers); e) creating added value through a closer relationship between research and agricultural and livestock practices; and f) promoting the faster and more widespread practical application of innovative solutions.
Biorumioli is a strategic and innovative project that will produce bioeconomic and functional dairy products from small ruminants fed olive pulp, a byproduct of the olive oil industry. This ingredient will be incorporated into their diets using a technology or combination of technologies that will be efficient and economically viable for its processing. Information and communication technologies will be used to ensure the traceability of the products generated and provide consumer information through the development of QR codes.
Biorumioli is focused on the circular bioeconomy, ensuring that a byproduct such as olive pulp is not only valued by its reuse, but also provides an added benefit as a result. The project is innovative and strategic, encompassing thematic areas such as agriculture, improved production techniques, productivity and processes, the agri-food industry, food safety, organoleptic characterization, market research, and marketing, aligning with the main objective of the Andalusian Circular Bioeconomy Strategy.
