Pyrenees Rice Operational Group: Improving the marketing of Aragon rice through a differentiated quality designation (DOP)

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2026
  • Assigned Budget 70.000,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Aragón
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
Abstract
With the implementation of innovative cultivation practices, it is estimated that water consumption will be reduced by 25%, nitrogen fertilizer input will be reduced by 15%, and seed input will be reduced by 25%. This will result in a 5% reduction in total costs for a rice farm. This will also maintain the ecosystem and the rich biodiversity, especially the wide variety of birds that inhabit the rice crop. Furthermore, rice is grown in constant flooding, which leaches salts, "improving" the soil and preventing desertification in rice-growing areas. This improves the integration of the production sector into the food chain and diversifies the economy of the rural population, as the project covers all stages of the food chain, from rice production by Aragonese farmers, its processing in the community's mills, and the subsequent marketing of the rice under a quality label recognized by the European Union, the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).
Description

With the implementation of innovative cultivation practices, it is estimated that water consumption will be reduced by 25%, nitrogen fertilizer input will be reduced by 15%, and seed will be reduced by 25%. This will result in a 5% reduction in total costs for a rice farm. This will also maintain the ecosystem and the rich biodiversity, especially the wide variety of birds that inhabit the rice crop.

Furthermore, rice is grown under constant flooding, which leaches salts, thus improving the soil and preventing desertification in rice-growing areas. This improves the integration of the production sector into the food chain and diversifies the rural population's economy, as the project covers all stages of the food chain, from rice production by Aragonese farmers, to the processing of the product in the community's mills, and to the subsequent marketing of the rice under a quality label recognized by the European Union, the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO).

Description of activities

The project is divided into 4 main activities:

  • Atcv 1. Actions in rice cultivation plots (dry sowing, incorporation of encapsulated fertilizer in the sowing line, application of biostimulants).
  • Atcv 2. Actions dedicated to brand recognition of Arroz de Aragón (product definition, creation of corporate image, development of digital environment, elaboration of content plan and selection of dissemination media, market research).
  • Actv 3. Technical studies for the creation of DOP.
  • Atcv 4. Actions for the integration of the differential product into healthy eating.
Objectives

Improve the marketing of Aragon rice by obtaining a PDO (Denomination of Origin) and developing new innovative varieties that add value to healthy food niches. Unify all rice production in Aragon, increase its added value, facilitate its penetration into the national market, and promote its recognition by society. Prevent the abandonment of cultivated areas where there is no room for other production, promoting the economic sustainability of Aragon's agricultural holdings.
