Operational Group: Utilization for breeding Celtic pigs
- Type Operational group
- Execution 2016
- Assigned Budget 583.523,00 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Galicia
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2014-2020
The objective of this Operational Group is to harness forest biomass production as animal feed, supplementing it with animal feed, and also to conduct a study of carcass and meat quality parameters from this rearing system.
The aim is to establish a semi-extensive pig farming system to harness the resources produced by the forest in a sustainable and economically profitable manner. This will contribute to controlling plant biomass by reducing scrubland, which translates into more effective control of forest fires, and will also contribute to rural development by establishing a population in a disadvantaged area. This could create a model that can be easily extended to other areas of Galicia.
The compatibility of the proposed livestock model with silvopastoral management to increase farm profitability will be linked to the study of an efficient management system geared toward quality meat production linked to a specific area of origin and breed of pig.
