Operational Group: Genetic improvement of the Friesian breed cow in the Cadí SCCL farms

This project involves a player in the dairy food industry (Cadí SCCL), a local dairy cattle farmers' association (Friesona Association of Alt Urgell and Cerdanya AFAUC) which is currently part of a Catalan federation (Federation of Friesona of Catalonia FEFRIC) working on technical issues of genetic improvement in the Friesona breed of dairy cow.

The various stakeholders have their own areas of expertise, which they coordinate to achieve common goals. The foundation is laid for working together by selecting animals at an early age to optimize the efficiency of the overall production process and adapt milk production to industry demand.

This approach is made possible through the use of new knowledge techniques such as genomics, which helps us select the most interesting genes from the population of Friesian females and adapt the milk composition, fat, and protein types, to meet the demands of the food industry.

This also impacts the overall animal population on farms, improving the quality of breeding and enabling better management of each farm space and increasing the sustainability and viability of livestock farms.
