Operational Group: Improving the competitiveness of the Catalan wine and cork sector by determining the added value provided by Catalan cork in the winemaking process and obtaining data on its productive potential.

  • Type Operational group
  • Execution 2017
  • Assigned Budget 78.116,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Cataluña
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2014-2020
Description

The project involves creating an innovative approach to symbiosis between the cork and wine sectors of the DO Empordà (with possible extension to all of Catalonia), by characterizing the differences between cork extracted in Catalonia and foreign cork used for the manufacture of corks.

In this way, the competitiveness of wineries and cork manufacturers would be improved with the use of differentiated quality cork stoppers.

Objectives
  • To increase knowledge about Catalan cork stoppers and, in particular, their influence on the winemaking and preservation process.
  • Strengthen ties between cork forestry, the cork industry, and winemakers in the Empordà region, as well as leading research centers in the field.
  • To develop a new product (cork stopper from Catalan forests) that will help improve the competitiveness of Catalan wineries, forest owners, and the cork-making industry by determining the distinctive characteristics of Catalan cork stoppers and their influence on the performance of wines sealed with this cork.
  • To update the available information on the cork production capacity in Catalonia to encourage investment in the sector, thanks to the availability of data that facilitates the analysis of raw material availability and long-term economic performance.
