Description

Improving the sustainability and profitability of corn cultivation in Spain by using digital technologies and tools and its environmental certification throughout the value chain.

Objectives
  • Generate knowledge on the current technical-economic situation of the corn sector in Spain to detect its critical points and opportunities for adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.
  • Develop a certified Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology designed specifically for corn cultivation nationwide.
  • Improve the sustainability of corn cultivation by implementing a Precision Agriculture Techniques Protocol (PTAP).
  • Evaluate the impact of project results to sustainably increase maize crop productivity.
  • Promote the implementation of PTAP and GOMAIZ certification and increase awareness of associated sustainability improvements among actors in the corn value chain.
Results
  • Technical and economic characterization of the main cultivation areas at the national level and the critical points and opportunities for adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.
  • Development of a certifiable and validated methodology for the sustainability of corn cultivation in Spain.
  • Development of a Precision Agriculture Techniques Protocol (PTAP) to improve the sustainability of corn cultivation.
  • Evaluation of the impact of project results, resilience to climate change in the sector and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The implementation of PTAP and certification have been promoted and appropriate recommendations have been established for agents in the corn value chain.
