Description

Due to the intensive use of chemical fertilizers in soil cultivation and pesticide-based agricultural practices, the health and naturalness of the soil deteriorate, water is polluted, and biological diversity is diminished by the effects of chemicals. This danger is mentioned in all the sources examined in the field study and represents a serious threat to future generations. Our goal was to reduce negative environmental conditions and increase production without harming the environment or nature.

Sustainable agriculture is an agricultural system that implements technological practices that meet the needs of present and future generations and protect natural resources and human health. The purpose of Sustainable Agriculture is to keep the economy afloat in the short and long term, improve the quality of life of those engaged in agriculture, and develop practices to achieve this goal, while maintaining agricultural productivity and reducing environmental damage. Food production can be increased by 58% through sustainable agricultural practices. The existence of similar studies by non-governmental organizations is indisputable.

After conceiving the project, we developed a questionnaire using a Google form and sent it to the relevant people for completion. The survey results revealed a widespread lack of awareness in this field. Those living in rural areas who engage in agriculture often rely on hearsay and unconsciously turn to herbal medicine. We raised awareness about the importance of sustainable agriculture; we also educated young people about environmental and nature protection, helping to develop young people who respect nature and help leave a better world for future generations.

Description of activities

Activities to increase youth knowledge and awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture:

1- Expert presentation on sustainable agriculture: An interactive presentation on the importance of sustainable agriculture, its basic characteristics, and points to consider.

2- Station work on sustainable benefits: After the expert, in the 2nd session, the stations created their own stations containing the basic points of sustainable agriculture, participants visited these stations in groups to discuss their opinions on the relevant topic, station spokespersons prepared the report of that station and presented it to the other participants.

3- Presentations of sustainable agricultural practices in my country: The groups presented sustainable agricultural practices from their own countries. After each 10-minute presentation, the entire group discussed the positive and negative aspects, shortcomings, and advantages of the practice.

Activities were carried out to teach young people about sustainable agricultural practices that they can apply in their own homes and gardens and to motivate them to carry out these practices:

1- SWOT Analysis, I measure myself: Individual participants identified their strengths-weaknesses, opportunities-threats, measured their potential for sustainable agriculture and received recommendations to develop weaknesses.

2- A visit to Viu Can Gel: Overview of organic farming; development of organic farming worldwide and in our country; principles for starting organic farming; control mechanisms in organic farming; visit and report on the practice areas after providing information on the general principles of organic plant and animal production.

3- Technical trip: On-site examination of the work carried out, discussion with farm officials, division of participants into groups and completion of tasks assigned by farm officials in the agricultural field.

4- Sustainable Agriculture is at Home: Mini-practices on growing tomatoes, peppers, onions, and parsley at home. Participants were divided into groups of three and filled the containers provided with soil, added the necessary materials, and planted the seedlings and seeds. The maintenance of these seedlings until harvest was described. Afterward, participants presented these treatments, and their advantages and disadvantages were discussed.

Activities to introduce permaculture as a sustainable agricultural practice to young people:

1- The permaculture expert explains: Presentation on permaculture and its philosophy, characteristics, advantages and why it should be preferred, demonstration of examples of permaculture practices at home with images and presentation of their production, expressing the opinions of the participants about permaculture.

2- Permaculture practice: Participants were divided into eight groups and asked to create terraces, balconies, and window permaculture projects in three different categories. A prize was awarded to one group in each category that created the most beautiful permaculture project.

Objectives

The project aimed to reduce threats to ecological balance through sustainable agricultural practices, raise awareness among young people to promote smart and sustainable agricultural practices, and encourage them to engage in sustainable agricultural production.

The specific objectives of our project were the following:

  • Increase youth knowledge and awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture;
  • Teach them sustainable agricultural practices that they can apply in their homes and gardens, and motivate them to practice them;
  • Introduce permaculture as sustainable agriculture to young people.
Results

Our project supported the participation of young people in agricultural activities and activities related to nature and environmental protection. All activities were carried out by young people, and it is hoped that they will make these experiences a habit in the future. Participants, who increased their knowledge and awareness of the importance of sustainable agriculture, implemented sustainable agricultural practices in their homes and gardens, became more sensitive individuals, and implemented permaculture practices such as sustainable farming based on their own resources. In this context, the young people contributed to reducing threats to ecological balance through sustainable agricultural practices, disseminating smart and sustainable farming practices, and increasing sustainable agricultural production.

One of the most important impacts of our project was job creation. Young people became more motivated to dedicate themselves to sustainable agriculture. Sustainable agriculture has the potential to generate social well-being by increasing productivity. Young people who wish to work in this field will be able to generate long-term income. Hearing from experts about sustainable agricultural practices, which are inexpensive but extremely important for the environment and a livable world, increased their long-term motivation and made them more constructive.

On the other hand, the young people who learned by living in sustainable and organic agricultural environments with technical trips began to observe their surroundings with greater awareness and distinguish between good and bad. Group work improved their team spirit and allowed them to be more efficient. They gained experience in intercultural dialogue, which allowed them to continue in the subsequent period. Thanks to the cultural evenings, they broke down their prejudices and became curious about the languages of different nations, which increased their desire to learn. This situation contributed to strengthening the relationship between "a language and a person" and increasing their self-confidence in learning a language. The fact that the project language was English and that the participants spoke English throughout the week contributed to increasing their language proficiency. In this sense, they attracted the attention of other young people by creating an environment for conversation in their own language outside the project, thus fostering linguistic diversity.

Disadvantaged young people, who had not been involved in the project environment and had not benefited from these opportunities for various reasons, found the opportunity to partially overcome their disadvantages and broaden their horizons through our project. This situation significantly contributed to their becoming more productive and self-confident individuals. The informal methods applied throughout the project contributed to their personal development. Methods such as group work, presentations, debate, interpretation, and individual analysis allowed the young people to express themselves while also encouraging their reflection.
