Agriculture, and viticulture in particular, stands out as one of the sectors most sensitive to climate change, especially in the Mediterranean region. Furthermore, Spain has the largest area of vineyards for winemaking in the world, spread across all the autonomous communities, so any negative impact on such a significant sector of the economy can have significant economic and social repercussions.
In order to promote the transfer of knowledge and mobilization of all the actors involved to boost adaptation to the challenges posed by climate change in the vineyard sector, the Private Foundation for Business and Climate has carried out different actions within the framework of the VIn & ADAP II project, which with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, have allowed:
To assess the impacts of climate change on the wine industry, identify the sector's perceptions of the issue, identify needs and opportunities, and identify key stakeholders. To share experiences and knowledge, and foster collaboration through a Learning Expedition: seven training workshops and three final days of presentations, attended by a total of 266 participants.
Promote knowledge transfer and mobilize all stakeholders to drive adaptation to the challenges posed by climate change in the wine sector.
Conclusions that can be drawn from the project: The sector is already aware of the effects of climate change and is concerned about the impacts it is having on its activities. It is also aware of the need to act, but is disoriented and overwhelmed by the situation and is demanding support.
Challenges identified: Build a global vision of the problem in order to design solutions.
Promote communication and information at all levels: consumers, industry, and public administrations. Develop coordinated action and collaboration in the broadest sense of the word. Conduct research that addresses the needs of the sector using accessible and relatable language. Measures identified in precision agriculture: Soil management, Water resource management
Measures identified in terms of regulation and standards: Flexibility and streamlining of bureaucracies
Other measures: Professionalization and training Applied research "in situ"
