The project "BioStandards: Certifications and Labeling for Biodiversity in the Agri-Food Sector," developed by the Global Nature Foundation with the support of the Biodiversity Foundation, was launched to improve the relationship with biodiversity of food processing companies and retailers throughout their supply chains.
The project focused on the food sector because it has a major impact on biodiversity in Europe and beyond, and because of its enormous potential to contribute to halting biodiversity loss. Food processing companies and retailers could improve their relationship with biodiversity throughout their supply chains. In addition to supply chain rules, companies are using standards and labels to ensure a certain level of product quality.
One thousand participants from the agri-food sector have received technical information on how standards, company regulations, and seals can help improve biodiversity protection. The Global Nature Foundation has signed five stewardship agreements with cooperatives and agri-food companies. It is piloting a tool that measures biodiversity performance at the farm level, and through Biodiversity Action Plans, improvement measures are being designed and implemented in nearly 1,000 hectares of woody and fruit and vegetable crops in Spain.
