Description
Smart grazing for the enhancement of ecosystem services. Demonstrative actions of the potential use of sensor technology (virtual enclosures, animal health tracking and monitoring) combined with geographic information systems for efficient livestock management
Contextual description
Adopting smart grazing systems using GPS devices and virtual fencing can optimize pasture use, monitor livestock movements and status, reduce costs, and increase management efficiency. Transferring and adapting these technologies to small and medium-sized producers is key to maximizing ecosystem services and ensuring the sector's future viability.
Results
Three types of technologies were compared: LoRaWAN collars record detailed activity and physiological alerts using solar power. Standard GSM collars monitor temperature and movement, useful for multiple species. Virtual fencing collars delineate grazing areas with audible alerts and downloads, optimizing management without physical fences. Demonstration and outreach activities were conducted.
