AGROALNEXT Project: Obtaining active packaging using paper, cardboard and cardboard for fresh solid foods

  • Type Project
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Murcia, Región de
  • Main source of financing NextGenerationEU
  • Project website Web del Proyecto
Description
The project develops sustainable active packaging based on paper and cardboard treated with bioactive compounds, such as essential oils, to extend the shelf life of fresh mushrooms and refrigerated peeled garlic, replacing conventional plastics and reducing environmental impact.
Results
The active micro-corrugated cardboard packaging maintains the quality of the mushrooms, with low PPO (polyphenol oxidase) activity. It was validated that pretreating sliced mushrooms with powdered vinegar can replace chemical additives and extend their shelf life. An active cardboard tray (with PLA film) maintains the color/brightness of garlic cloves.
