AGROALNEXT Project: Development of sustainable viticulture through the use of new varieties resistant to diseases (powdery mildew and downy mildew) and water scarcity
- Type Project
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Murcia, Región de
- Main source of financing NextGenerationEU
- Project website Web del Proyecto
Description
The project promotes the genetic improvement of wine grapes, evaluating new varieties that are more resistant to powdery mildew and downy mildew and better adapted to water scarcity and high temperatures, favoring a more sustainable, profitable viticulture adapted to climate change.
Results
The new varieties evaluated in different commercial areas of the Region of Murcia maintained the quality attributes that justified their selection in warm climates. The wines from these new varieties, after barrel aging, demonstrated high-quality oenological characteristics. Water loss through transpiration under unfavorable water conditions, regulated by stomatal density and size, also depended on the variety evaluated. New parent plants with high resistance to powdery mildew and downy mildew have been incorporated into the breeding program. Efficient multiplex PCRs have been designed for genotyping the new varieties and identifying the presence of powdery mildew and downy mildew resistance loci.
