Description
Recovery of local maize varieties in Asturias and evaluation of their potential value for cultivation in organic agriculture and their suitability for forage production
Contextual description
The Asturian agricultural sector faces the challenge of revaluing and utilizing local maize varieties, adapted to the environment and resistant to stress, pests, and diseases, as a strategic alternative for organic farming. The ban on herbicides and insecticides necessitates the search for rustic and resilient varieties that allow for acceptable yields and the generation of value-added products. Evaluating this genetic material is key to strengthening the sustainability, competitiveness, and differentiation of organic production.
Results
Seven local varieties and a commercial control were cultivated. Although the control had a higher yield, the local varieties showed strategic advantages (production and nutritional value): Santander and Cangas de Onís showed better forage quality and greater resistance to lodging, while the Arbas de Pajares variety stood out for its protein content, and Posada Rojo and Trelles had lower ash content.
