Biodiversity Foundation Project: Infoadapta-agri II

Description

The Infoadapta-agri project has completed its second phase to inform, communicate, raise awareness, and attract climate change adaptation measures in agriculture and livestock farming. The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA) has completed the project "Infoadapta-agri II: Information, communication, awareness, and training on climate change adaptation measures in agriculture and livestock farming," which was supported by the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition through its 2017 grant application period. The project's objective was to advance awareness and training in the agricultural sector on the need to implement specific adaptation measures to reduce the effects of climate change. To deepen knowledge of the measures to be implemented, a preliminary study was conducted, surveying representative farmers.

Based on the results, a report was prepared with the eight measures considered potential for implementation. A training session was held for technicians where the report's decisions were discussed in depth, with the aim of improving the activities carried out by farmers and ranchers in their areas. At the same time, a report was commissioned from the University of Puerto Rico (UPM), including simulations of wheat and barley yield trends for different locations, modifying planting dates and crop cycle length options. In addition, to support the training, information sessions were held for farmers, focusing on specific field experiences. Upon completion, a manual was produced that compiled the project's results, general survey data, general climate change considerations obtained, and a summary of the report prepared by the University. Finally, a final session was held to explain the project methodology and its results.

Description of activities

To deepen understanding of the measures to be implemented, a preliminary study was conducted, surveying representative farmers. A training session was held for technicians, where the report's decisions were explored in depth with the aim of improving the activities of farmers and ranchers in their areas. The report included simulations of wheat and barley yield trends for different locations, modifying planting dates and crop length options. Information sessions were held for farmers, which focused on specific field experiences.

Objectives

Advance awareness and training in the agricultural sector on the need to implement concrete adaptation measures to reduce the effects of climate change.

Results

A manual that compiles the project's results, general survey data, general climate change considerations, and a summary of the report.
