Description
RES4PACK uses waste from the wine and almond industries to generate biodegradable and active packaging.
Contextual description
Revaluation of different agri-food waste (almond skin and shell, grape stems and pomace from winemaking and rice straw, banana peels) in the development of active biodegradable materials for food packaging, using biodegradable polymers and sustainable techniques (subcritical water extraction and bleaching with hydrogen peroxide) for the fractionation of the waste.
Results
Agri-food waste such as grape and almond peels has been transformed into biodegradable and active packaging with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, extending the shelf life of food, reducing dependence on fossil-based plastics, and promoting the circular economy.
