Abstract

Development of suitable cultivation methods for table grapes in the Community of Madrid, field trials, and validation of the trellis cultivation technique. One of the project's objectives is to implement, in the Community of Madrid, table grape cultivation using a trellis training system, which is much more productive than trellis training and produces higher-quality fruit. To this end, two training systems have been tested and compared to assess their cost and medium-term performance.

In one of the experimental plots, a 1,000 m2 trellis has been established, while in the other plot a T-shaped trellis has been established. Although it does not allow the high production obtained in trellises, it is also widely used for table grape cultivation today and could be an advantage by offering simpler crop management. Six seedless varieties have been cultivated, as well as the seeded variety Red Globe, which will be used as a control to compare the competitiveness and profitability of both types of varieties in a local market within the Community of Madrid. Techniques related to the search and selection of new varieties for table grape cultivation in the Community of Madrid, field trials and laboratory analysis.

Using the Genomic Selection technique, based on the morphological description of 27 individuals and the use of 27 SSR markers linked to traits of interest in table grapes, potential phenotypes for these traits have been imputed in a progeny of more than 2,000 individuals. Thanks to this rapid characterization, 22 seedless individuals with a muscatel flavor and medium-high pulp consistency have been preselected. Of these, 14 are white and 8 are red. These will be offered exclusively to Madrid growers, improving their competitiveness. Furthermore, the use of this technique will provide information on the usefulness of the markers used for their application in Marker-Assisted Selection.

Description

This project was conceived in response to a demand from GO farmers for advice on table grape cultivation. They are seeking varieties with more interesting characteristics than the varieties traditionally grown on their farms.

Furthermore, these farmers are greatly interested in IMIDRA's offer to select new improved varieties recently obtained in previous projects. These varieties could be protected in the medium term and freely available for production. However, for other farmers, their cultivation and marketing would be subject to tariffs.

All of this will significantly improve the competitiveness of farmers in the Community of Madrid in the market.

Description of activities

The work is aimed at improving agronomic practices for table grapes in the Community of Madrid. Within this overall objective, we break down the following phases:

  • Introduction of appropriate management techniques for this crop.
  • Introduction of a “parral” type conduction method.
  • Use an organic farming system to protect the environment.
  • Selection of new varieties that meet the specific demands of farmers and consumers in the Community of Madrid.
Objectives

The project's objective is to improve agronomic practices for table grapes in the Community of Madrid and provide a technical response to the challenges that organic production poses specifically for this crop.

Our goal is to increase grape yield and quality in a competitive and environmentally sustainable manner. To ensure this increase is sustainable, technical support will be provided both in crop management techniques and in the selection of new varieties that are more suitable for our region, both based on environmental criteria and current consumer demand.
