GO SMARTFARMRANI: Precision livestock farming to increase the sustainability and resilience of extensive farms of native breed suckler cows: the Avilanian - Black Iberian breed as a model
- Type Grupo operativo
- Status In progress
- Execution 2024 -2027
- Scope Supraautonómico
- Autonomous community Asturias, Principado de; Castilla y León; Madrid, Comunidad de
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
The project seeks to increase the profitability and efficiency of farms of suckler cows of the native RANI breed ( Avileña - Black Iberian Breed ) through the use of precision livestock farming and whose results serve as a model for other extensive breeds.
The Project includes the initial assessment of the health, reproductive and feeding strategies of RANI ( Avileña - Negra Ibérica Breed ) farms and the implementation of a technical-economic study of the current situation of the breed. The effective and automatic digitalization of the processes in the Rearing Center for future breeding cows (virtual fencing system for geolocation, herbometers for calculating pasture production, RFID ear tags for individual productivity monitoring). Likewise, a management and feeding model is being developed to reduce the unproductive period of heifers and a technical-economic study is being carried out that will allow the profitability of applying precision livestock farming in the Rearing Center to be evaluated and will allow it to be compared with that of traditional systems linked to the development of animal welfare indicators linked to heifers.
In addition, the project carries out an environmental study, based on the calculation of the carbon footprint and life cycle analysis, on representative farms. Development of resilience descriptors at farm and individual level and a final technical-economic study to demonstrate the increase in farm profitability.
The activities to be carried out are:
- Initial study of farms of suckler cows of the Avileña - Black Iberian breed: selection of farms, preparation of questionnaires, collection and storage of information, technical-economic study.
- Development of new feeding, health and reproductive strategies based on the use of precision livestock farming: sensorisation of the rearing centre, implementation and monitoring of nutritional, health and reproductive protocols, storage, management and processing of data, technical-economic evaluation.
- Improving the level of animal welfare of heifers through the use of precision livestock farming: selection and improvement of welfare indices, validation in pilot farms, implementation of digitalisation equipment, comparative study between the breeding centre and pilot farms.
- Improving the environmental sustainability of heifers through the use of precision livestock farming: selection and application of carbon footprint estimation models and life cycle analysis, carbon footprint estimation and LCA in rearing centres, comparative study of environmental sustainability.
- Development of resilience descriptors in extensive vaccination: collection and processing of collected data, development of descriptors, association of genetic data of the breed with resilience parameters.
- Demonstration of increased profitability of extensive suckler cow farms through the use of precision livestock farming: technical-economic study after digitalisation and development of new production strategies.
The general objective is to increase the profitability and efficiency of farms of suckler cows of the native Avileña Negra Ibérica breed through the use of precision livestock farming, the results of which serve as a model for other extensive breeds.
Specific objectives are:
- Develop new feeding, health and reproductive strategies in the rearing of RANI heifers ( Avileña - Black Iberian breed).
- To improve the level of animal welfare and environmental sustainability of RANI ( Avileña - Black Iberian Breed) heifer rearing.
- Develop resilience descriptors in extensive cattle.
