The project seeks to increase the profitability and efficiency of farms of suckler cows of the native RANI breed ( Avileña - Black Iberian Breed ) through the use of precision livestock farming and whose results serve as a model for other extensive breeds.
Initial assessment of the health, reproductive, and nutritional strategies of RANI farms and a technical and economic study of the breed's current status.
Effective and automated digitalization of processes at the Breeding Center for future breeding cows (virtual fencing system for geolocation, herbometers for calculating pasture production, RFID ear tags for individual productivity monitoring). Development of a management and feeding model to reduce the unproductive period of heifers.
A technical and economic study will assess the profitability of precision livestock farming at the Breeding Center and compare it with traditional systems.
Development of Animal Welfare indicators linked to heifers. Environmental study based on carbon footprint calculations and life cycle analysis on representative farms. Development of resilience descriptors at the farm and individual levels. Final technical-economic study to demonstrate increased farm profitability.
- Initial study of farms with suckler cows of the Avileña-Negra Ibérica breed: farm selection, questionnaire development, data collection and storage, technical and economic study.
- Development of new nutritional, health, and reproductive strategies based on the use of precision livestock farming: sensorization of the breeding center, implementation and monitoring of nutritional, health, and reproductive protocols, data storage, management, and processing, and technical and economic evaluation.
- Improving the welfare of heifers through the use of precision livestock farming: selection and improvement of welfare indices, validation on pilot farms, implementation of digitalization equipment, comparative study between rearing centers and pilot farms.
- Improving the environmental sustainability of heifers through precision livestock farming: selection and application of carbon footprint estimation and life cycle analysis models, carbon footprint estimation and LCA in a rearing center, comparative environmental sustainability study.
- Development of extensive vaccine resilience descriptors: collection and processing of collected data, development of descriptors, association of breed genetic data with resilience parameters.
- Demonstration of increased profitability of extensive suckler cow farms through the use of precision livestock farming: a technical and economic study following digitalization and the development of new production strategies.
- Develop new nutritional, health, and reproductive strategies for RANI heifer rearing.
- Improve the level of animal welfare and environmental sustainability of RANI's heifer rearing.
- Develop resilience descriptors in extensive cattle farming.
